What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Originating in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth has been celebrated on June 19th since 1865. The name “Juneteenth” combines the month the celebration takes place- June, with the date- the 19th.

What’s the Difference between Juneteenth and July 4th?

July 4th marks the date that America declared its independence from Great Britain. During this time, enslaved people were not free. Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was approved in 1863, however it wasn’t until General Gordon Granger entered Galveston, Texas in 1865 alongside freed black soldiers that the last of the enslaved people were given the message that they were finally free people. Thus, Juneteenth was born.
