Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Vegan Caramel Sauce:

  • organic cane sugar – the sugar in this recipe is the base of the vegan caramel sauce. You’ll melt it down slowly to form into caramel sauce.
  • vegan butter – this helps to add a nice flavor to the caramel. I haven’t substituted with any other oils, but I’d imagine you could substitute with a neutral oil of your preference if needed.
  • vegan heavy whipping cream – you can use whatever vegan heavy whipping cream you’d like. I haven’t tried any substitutions for this ingredient yet.

How to Make Vegan Caramel Sauce

This vegan caramel sauce comes together quickly! The first thing you’ll want to do is prepare all of your ingredients so that they’re ready to go when you need them. Go ahead and place your measured out sugar, melted butter, vegan heavy whipping cream, and salt in small dishes that are easily accessible while your preparing the sauce.

Begin by adding the sugar to a saucepan over a medium low heat. If necessary, you can spread out the sugar to create an evenly spread layer. Allow the sugar to melt on its own. You’ll notice that the outside will likely start to melt first. Once you notice that, use a silicone spatula to pull the sugar from around the edges inward.

The sugar will be lumpy, but that’s okay. You’ll also notice that the sugar will change colors, going from an off white to a light colored brown. Continue stirring constantly with the spatula until all lumps have been melted, bringing the outside in repeatedly. Once the lumps have all melted away, remove it from the heat and quickly whisk in the melted vegan butter until combined.

Then add the heavy whipping cream and salt. Whisk these ingredients together until the mixture is combined. If the ingredients are lumpy, feel free to return the pan to the heat to encourage the lumps to melt while continuing to whisk. Once the mixture is smooth you are all set!

It’s important to note that the mixture will be very thin at this point but don’t worry, it will thicken as it cools. Transfer the mixture to a storage container and continue allowing it to cool. Once the vegan caramel sauce has cooled, feel free to use it however you’d like! This vegan caramel sauce recipe is perfect for dipping fruit and drizzling on your favorite desserts, or even eating it by the spoonful.

While I haven’t tried it personally, I suspect coconut milk will also work as a 1:1 substitute.

On the counter for up to one week and in the fridge for two! If after keeping in the fridge you notice that it’s no longer as soft as you’d like, just leave it on the counter for a bit until it’s room temperature.

  • Add sugar to a sauce pan and let sit until it starts to melt consistently around the edges.
    1 cup organic cane sugar
  • Using a silicone spatula, pull the sugar from around the edges of the pot, inward. Sugar will be lumpy and turn a light brown color.
  • Continue stirring constantly with the spatula until all lumps have melted.
  • Once the lumps have melted, remove from the heat and grab a whisk.
  • Whisk in the melted vegan butter (may bubble violently- it's okay) until combined, then whisk in the heavy whipping cream and salt until combined. If mixture becomes lumpy, return to low heat and continue to whisk until smooth. Mixture will be thin.
    4 tbsp vegan butter, ยฝ cup vegan heavy whipping cream, ยฝ tsp salt
  • Transfer the mixture to a storage container and allow to cool (mixture will thicken as it cools).
  • Use as desired. Enjoy!
